3 – IGREJA DE PÉRGAMO/CHURCH OF PERGAMUM

Críticas  – Tolerância a falsos ensinos – Balaão, nicolaítas.

Apocalipse 2:12-17.

3 – CHURCH OF PERGAMUM

INTRODUCTION

The seven churches of Asia Minor were historic Christian communities. They received direct messages from the Lord Jesus Christ, dictated by the apostle John and recorded in Revelation 2-3. Each letter follows a similar pattern, but with significant differences and the spiritual condition of each church .

The letters were addressed to the Men Appointed by God (pastors) – To the angel of the Church which is. Each letter presents Jesus Christ with different characteristics.

Praise – Loyalty where Satan has his throne.

Criticisms – Tolerance of false teachings – Balaam, Nicolaitans.

Exhortation – Jesus promises a battle if there is no repentance from the church and its members.

To all the churches Jesus said, “I know your works.”

Revelation 2:12-17. To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: “ These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas , my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives. Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality. Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” He who has ears to hear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.

Jesus’ letter to the church in Pergamum presents a complex picture of a community that maintained its public faith in a hostile environment, but failed to combat internal corruption. Its spiritual condition was one of compromised outward faithfulness and tolerance of internal errors.

This church was situated and operating in a city considered to be the throne of Satan. Jesus recognizes the loyalty of the church in Pergamum; it remained faithful in an extremely adverse context.

John 17:15. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

Jesus interceded in prayer, pleading with the Father for his disciples. He asked for protection from evil and malevolent influence, but what preserves the lives of God’s children is obedience to the Truth. Jesus asked for spiritual protection and unity for those who work for the Kingdom of Heaven in the world, without being of the world.

Pergamon was an important religious and political center, home to the magnificent altar of Zeus – considered one of the wonders of the ancient world – and was the first city to officially adopt the cult of the Roman emperor.

This environment of idolatry and absolute political loyalty to the State is what Jesus calls the place where Satan’s throne is. This was hostile territory for the Church.

Despite the pressure, the church did not publicly deny its faith in Christ. Its faithfulness was tested to the extreme with the martyrdom of Antipas , whom Jesus called my faithful witness.

They stood firm in their confession in a place where declaring that Jesus is Lord was a direct challenge to the power that demanded – Caesar is Lord. This church had its faithfulness proven by Jesus himself.

Revelation 2:12. I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas , my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.

Despite the Church’s outward firmness, it was spiritually failing; it was complacent with corrosive doctrines that allowed assimilation with pagan culture.

Romans 1:32. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

To consent, support, applaud, or approve is as serious as committing the sin of others. The person knows what is right, but chooses to agree with the wrong.

The Doctrine of Balaam – Encouraged believers to participate in pagan festivals that involved eating food sacrificed to idols and practicing sexual immorality. It was a teaching that sought to accommodate the Christian faith to the social and religious customs of the city, eliminating conflict and persecution.

The Doctrine of the Nicolaitans – They promoted similar ideas, although their doctrine is not known with certainty; the mention of Balaam and the vehement condemnation of Jesus indicate that they justified immoral practices and idolatry.

Jesus’ main criticism was that the church tolerated those who taught wrong things. The church didn’t practice them, but to consent to them, to support them, is the same as approving them.

Jesus gave a clear command: Repent! Stop being passive, change your attitude, stop tolerating wrongdoing. Jesus was telling this church to wake up; it was confusing doctrines, it was drunk on spiritual, moral, and material matters.

Nothing different from the church of our time, pastors with the spirit of Balaam, manipulating the Scriptures and hiding the Truth for greed.

The church of Pergamum symbolizes a community that defends the faith against external attacks, but becomes vulnerable through complacency with internal error. The churches of this season are operating in the opposite way to the Church of Pergamum; they are holy internally, but externally they struggle with spiritual and moral integrity in the eyes of society.

Faithfulness to Christ requires the courage of public confession, through zeal for internal and external doctrinal purity. Judgment begins internally; it is necessary to first confront error within our own home.

CONCLUSION.

Christ’s letter to the Church in Pergamum addresses two important connections between the Old and New Testaments.

1. The connection between the doctrine of Balaam and the sin of the church in Pergamum.

2 – The connection between the two- edged sword ( mentioned in Revelation) and the judgment of the Midianites who caused Israel to sin.

In the Old Testament, Balaam’s counsel – Numbers 31:16. Behold, these, by the counsel of Balaam, caused the children of Israel to trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor ; and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.

New Testament: The Doctrine of Balaam – Revelation 2:14. “Nevertheless, I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality.”

In both passages, Balaam is portrayed as promoting idolatry and immorality, leading God’s people into sin.

The sword symbolizes divine judgment and condemnation against those who corrupt God’s people.

Numbers 31:8. And they killed every grown man. Besides those already dead, they killed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem , Zur, Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian; Balaam son of Beor also killed with the sword.

Absalonic Doctrine .

It is a strategy of indirect spiritual corruption, in which God’s people are led into sin through compromise with the world and immorality. This expression originates from the story of Balaam, in the Book of Numbers 22:25-31. It is cited in Revelation as a symbol of false tolerance and apostasy.

As we have studied, Balaam was a mercenary prophet; he was hired by King Balak to curse Israel.

God prevents Balaam from cursing directly, so Balaam, cunningly, manipulatively, and strategically, advises Balak to seduce the Israelites. He sends Moabite/Midianite women into the Israelite camp to commit sexual immorality, enticing them into idolatry (the worship of Baal- Peor ) through pagan feasts and rituals.

Numbers 25:1-3. While Israel was staying in Shittim , the people began to commit adultery with the daughters of Moab. These women invited the people to the sacrifices to their gods; and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. Israel joined themselves to Baal- peor , and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.

The doctrine of Balaam consists of teaching God’s people to relate to the world by allowing pagan and immoral practices to be tolerated in the name of coexistence or gain. Fidelity and integrity are compromised by material and sensual interests. The spirit of Balaam seeks financial reward in the Gospel.

Jesus rebukes the church in Pergamum for tolerating a doctrine characterized by eating things sacrificed to idols and participating in pagan cults, for practicing literal and spiritual sexual immorality, such as idolatry, and for corrupting the Christian community from within.

Balaam died physically, but there are many men running churches with that spirit in this season. Let us be vigilant both internally and externally regarding the advice of men who distort the Truth of the Lord Jesus Christ in favor of a freedom of licentiousness.

This signifies moral depravity and an unbridled pursuit of pleasure characterized by the deliberate rejection of biblically ethical sexual restrictions. God judged these practices among the Israelites with a sword. Jesus Christ criticized and threatened the church in Pergamum with the same sword for adapting their faith to the customs of the city.

If God’s grace is distorted, people will applaud, consent to, and support this false freedom. Because of carnal pleasures, they will distort the Truth, they will do as Balaam did, they will devise a worldly strategy to spiritualize the standards of Scripture for their own pleasure and cause God’s people to sin.

Balaam’s sin stirred up the people in the desert; now it stirs up the people in the Church to mingle with the world.
